Why Cast Iron?

Not only does cast iron retain heat extremely well, it distributes that heat evenly and slowly. This makes a cast iron dish ideal for slow cooking, braising, roasting, simmering and baking. The very same heat retention feature means complete “EGG-to-Table” convenience as your meal is guaranteed to stay hot. Our Cast Iron cookware range includes two enameled Dutch ovens which are easy to clean and dishwasher safe.

If seasoned correctly, cast iron is naturally non-stick, requiring far less oil and is a far healthier  way of cooking altogether.

Unlike cookware made of many other types of material, cast iron pots and pans actually improve with age and use. So, go ahead, give our range a try!

How to take care of your new investment? 

While the enameled Dutch ovens are dishwasher safe, never place raw cast iron in a dishwasher.

The cast iron Dutch Oven has been pre-seasoned before shipment from our factory. Clean with soapy water before first use and thereafter we recommend a hand wash with water and brush (no soap or detergent). Dry immediately after use and coat lightly with cooking oil after each use.

Store in a dry cool place after use.

A word of advice: Never “shock” a hot cast iron pan with cold water as it can crack. Instead, allow it to come to room temperature before cleaning and never use metallic scrubbers.

Only use wooden, silicone or nylon cooking utensils when cooking in the enameled cast iron range.

What user tips do you have for me? 

Preheat the Dutch Oven over a medium heat for increased non-stick performance. In fact, we recommend always pre-heating cast iron cookware before adding oil or food.

Add a small amount of cooking oil to the Dutch Oven before each use as well as after to season the metal.

Saturday, 22 July 2017, kicked off early at Libri Car Wash in Fourways, Johannesburg.  The Big Green Egg delivery caddy was one of the first vehicles to be tackled by the crew which included much loved characters like Hilda (Annelisa Weiland), Matrone (Annelize van der Ryst) and Charmaine (Vinette Ebrahim). The actors set to work and our beloved Egg mobile was soon shiny and clean. We can’t be sure, but we reckon the reward of a juicy boerewors roll may have “EGGed” them on?! The public, who had the opportunity to have their car washed by one of the team for only R100, also enjoyed some rolls cooked by Ziggy Mkhize from our Johannesburg office.

Of course, the Hirschs group came to the party and offered unmissable deals to supporters of this charity event.

The Big Green Egg team joined him recently for a cooking demo where we baked some homemade bread and grilled some lamb riblets.

Local Big Green Egg dealer, Patio Warehouse (just across the road from Old Town Italy) joined us as we kicked off with 2 x 1.4kgs beef short ribs. Having filled the firebox with Big Green Egg All Natural Lump Charcoal to just under the rim of the fire ring, we stabilised the EGG’s temperature at about 150°C – ready for a session of “Low and Slow” cooking. A convEGGtor was placed in the “legs up position” with the stainless steel grid on top. This the best way to cook indirectly. The ribs went in and the delicious aromas started wafting into the restaurant…

With the ribs still on the grid, we went local with a Castle beer can chicken. Propping half a can of lager – the other half had to be “quality tested”! – into the cavity of a free range chicken, we let it bubble away for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The result was a beautifully browned and juicy bird. This was the first to be sampled by customers – and wow, what a response! The chicken was downright delicious they said. The Folding Beer Can Vertical Chicken rack is a very handy accessory if you want to try this at home. 

We were now ready to braai some veggies and popped some peppers and onions onto the convEGGtor. The smoky aroma infused the veggies which were deliciously sweet once roasted.

The beef short ribs were ready to come off the EGG after having spent a leisurely 3 hours slowly cooking away. The result was melt-in-the-mouth perfection!

Last on the grid were some big, juicy burgers grilled to medium. We couldn’t think of a better way to end the day…

Having showcased the EGG’s versatility and ability to cook multiple dishes simultaneously, the verdict was that the Big Green Egg really is The Ultimate Cooking Experience™!
