How it Works
1. VERSATILE RANGE OF COOKING SURFACES
If you can think of it, you can cook it on the EGG. That’s because it’s not just a barbecue — it’s a way of life. And just like all ways of life, it’s multi-faceted. You’ve got your searing grids, your roasting trays, your pizza stones, your saucepans. In fact, rather than list everything out here, it’s probably easier to list the things you can’t cook on an EGG. Although, you may have to check back in with us on that one while we wrack our brains.
2. THE CONVEGGTOR
This is the most important addition to the EGG, for sure. The ConvEGGtor turns your barbecue into a pizza oven, a smoker, or a low-and-slow roasting machine. It’s made from the same NSF certified ceramics as the EGG itself to ensure total temperature stability and retention. We’re talking leave-it-overnight levels of stability and retention. The ConvEGGtor is one of the things that our competitors, try as they might, attempt to copy the most. It’s pretty flattering, really.
3. CAST IRON FIRE GRATE
The Fire Grate sits inside the Firebox. It’s perforated to allow airflow up through the EGG and also allows ash to drop down for easy removal after cooking. The Fire Grate is included with every EGG purchase.
4. CERAMIC FIRE RING
The Fire Ring stacks on top of the Fire Box, providing the shelf for the ConvEGGtor and cooking grids. It’s notched for ease of placement and stability, and you guessed it, it’s made out of the same ceramics you’ve come to know and love.
5. ONE-PIECE CERAMIC FIRE BOX
Our Fire Box stands up to searing temperatures without breaking a sweat. Founded on our tried and tested technology, we’ve built this design marvel to prevent any kind of breaking or cracking. It also features uniform holes for uniform airflow and convection, for better cooking and better longevity for your cook.
Big Green Egg Components and how they work
1. PATENTED REGGULATOR CAP
Weather-proof, rust-proof and burn-proof, the rEGGulator offers unprecedented control over your EGG. With better burn efficiency and duration, faster heat-up and cool-down times, and a whole range of sustained temperature settings. You’ll be cooking better, eating better and living simpler before you know it. When you’re all done, close the cap to extinguish your EGG. That’s all there is to it. The rEGGulator comes as standard on all EGG models.
2. HIGH-TEMP GASKET SEAL
You know what’s not okay? Waste. That’s why we put so much time into our gasket seal. This clever piece of design engineering keeps your EGG 100% airtight. If that doesn’t sound like something to write home about, it means you can make just one lump of charcoal last up to 24 hours. We know. It’s quite something. The best part is, because they’re made from our proprietary heat-resistant material, they’ll stand up to the hottest temperature you’ve got. Oh, and if you’re a clumsy chef cooking Sloppy Joes, don’t worry. They’re easy to replace too.
3. INSULATED CERAMIC BASE
EGGs get HOT. 1000˚C hot. So, just to be sure we made them out of NASA-inspired high-grade ceramics. For some, that’s overkill. For us, it’s what makes cooking on the EGG so great. It allows you to maintain a better cooking temperature, and keep fuel to a minimum. Even better, it means you get amazingly moist food and no flame flare-ups.
4. TEL-TRU DOME THERMOMETER
Tel-Tru thermometers have been made to the highest standards in the US for over 100 years. What they are is precise, rugged, accurate and responsive. What they’re not is normal. Which is exactly why we put them on the EGG. You can calibrate your Tel-Tru thermometer for long-term accuracy and responsiveness in any outdoor environment.
5. HAND-CRAFTED CERAMIC DOME
Our dimpled lids are iconic for a reason: they’ve got the credentials to back up the hype. Each one is made by artisans in our award-winning factory in Mexico and designed for the ultimate heat distribution experience. You’ll never have to turn your food again. Every EGG has a weatherproof coating tough enough for all kinds of weather and comes with a lifetime warranty.

6. PATENTED QUADRA-LINK HINGE SYSTEM
This patented re-alignment system will mean your EGG dome sits squarely on the base every time you open and close the lid. It’s spring-loaded too, making the lid effortless to lift and gentle to shut. You’ve probably seen similar hinges in stainless steel. We didn’t buy into that. We use a specially coated alloy instead. It’s rust-proof, which is a bonus, but most importantly it prevents expansion under heat. With these hinges, you’ve got a lid for life.
7. PATENTED DRAFT DOOR
We pioneered this one: a spark-protecting sliding draft door for ultimate airflow control. In essence, it works like a wood-burner: the wider you have it, the hotter the EGG gets. Together with the Reggulator, we’ve never seen airflow so precise. The best part is once you’ve got your temperature where you want it, that’s where it’ll stay. 12 hours, easy.
