Big Green Egg charcoal brings together the best of Southern African hardwoods: exotic Black Wattle (Acacia mearnsii) sourced from suppliers across South Africa, blended with iconic indigenous African acacias from Namibia, including black thorn (Senegalia mellifera) and Kalahari thorn (Vachellia luederitzii).

These acacia hardwoods give our blend a distinctly African character, bringing rich, wood-fired flavour to your food and a real taste of the African braai. Wherever in the world you light your Egg, there’s a little bit of Southern Africa glowing inside.

Our generous lump size and exclusive use of hardwood set our charcoal apart in and make it sought after around the world. This is restaurant-grade fuel for people who take their cooking seriously.

Our Namibian supply is all FSC-certified and comes from the careful, selective thinning of encroaching indigenous bush. In parts of Namibia, this thornbush has become excessively dense, crowding out grasses and reducing the open habitat that grazing animals and other wildlife depend on.

This selective thinning helps restore the balance between grassland and woody vegetation. Protected species, including camelthorn, and large trees remain standing. The harvested hardwood is put to use as charcoal, supporting the management and restoration of these bush-encroached landscapes.

The result is a thoughtfully sourced blend of renewable, 100% natural hardwood charcoal. There are no fillers, added nitrates, chemical accelerants, treated wood or petroleum products. Just good hardwood, doing what good hardwood does best.

It lights easily, burns hot and efficiently, and produces very little ash—giving you more time to cook and less to clean.
